Now if one is a disciple of Machiavelli, an independent might want to register in the party they would like to see fail in the general election and during the caucus/primary process champion, support and vote for the weakest candidates in that party.
The opportunity cost an independent pays for this Machivellian play is nil, nada, nothing…because as an independent one wouldn’t have had any caucus or primary opportunity in first place. An independent would only be able to vote in the November general election.
