The presidential ring has now been converted into fight cage 1 of the 2016 political circus. Each party will take turns in the blood sport events to be held between now and the end of March.
But as the misdirected media attention continues to focus on the presidential caucuses/primaries most American have lost sight of the importance of the various other races that will be determined in the November election. No president elected can accomplished any of their political goals articulated in their campaign rhetoric without the cooperation of the congress. Most of the 435 voting members of the House will be running for re-election and approximately one third of the Senate (34 seats) will be contested in the November election.
At present the political dynamics are that as one party has the presidency the other party controls the Congress. No laws can be initiated, no budgets approved, no treaties approved, and no Supreme Court or other appointments made without confirmation by the Congress. This has not been lost by those who want to control the Congress and straitjacket our democracy. Hundreds of millions of dark dollars are finding their was into these and other down ticket campaigns. But it doesn’t end with congress, the “state czars of democracy” who I identified in a previous post are state constitutional officers. The governor and the secretary of state are equally important. In many cases these constitutional officers are gatekeepers of our democracy and republic. For example several secretaries of state have changed voting rules along with the state legislature and have inhibited voter rights and the ability to cast a vote. Governors are equally important. One governor effectively changed the water system in one of his cities which poisoned a whole city. Another had his PUC kill rooftop solar with a loss of thousands of jobs, a third has cut higher education budgets and so the story goes. But the ultimate power lies with the redistricting task that sets the voting stage for the next ten years in an act called gerrymandering which through drawing district lines to favor one party’s candidates over another .
It is imperative for every person living in the United States to become informed, educated on the election process. Know what the candidates stand for, use that information to to finance and vote for those candidates who support your issues of interest, thereby transforming the current party controlled representative government. It will be interesting to see who actually shows up to the caucuses/primaries and their outcomes. Each party in each state set its’ own rules regarding who can participate in their caucus. Basically, all party caucuses and primaries require that a participant attending the caucus/primary must be a registered voter in that party. So the 40% of eligible voters who are classified as independents (no party affiliation) cannot participate in the presidential candidate selection process unless they choose to register in one of the political parties and attend their caucus or vote in their primary. Now if one is a disciple of Machiavelli, an independent might want to register in the party they would like to see fail in the general election and during the caucus/primary process champion, support and vote for the weakest candidates in that party.
The opportunity cost an independent pays for this Machivellian play is nil, nada, nothing…because as an independent one wouldn’t have had any caucus or primary opportunity in first place. An independent would only be able to vote in the November general election.
Will the caucuses/primaries be attended by Machiavelli or the tooth fairy? That is the question!
Remember politics is a blood sport and one must know how the game is played, not necessarily the rules of the game.

It’s now a couple of weeks when the primaries and caucuses begin and what do all those polls numbers really mean? It is January and the circus has come to town! Although it’s a three ring circus the media has focused on ring number one, the presidential election. During this period that ring has been pretty much a clown show and as such the media has wrapped its’ 24 hour news cycle around it. You don’t have to go far to find organizations and individuals who have a state interest in redistricting, gun registration, voter rights, gaming, etc. Pay attention to the real voting record of those running for re-election or higher office as opposed to their campaign rhetoric… which many times is nothing more than a pack of lies. Cautiously examine the record of gubernatorial, secretary of state candidates, and legislators to see who have done a creditable job in representing their constituents in an honest manner.
